What is Oral Surgery?

Diseases, injuries and defects of the hard and soft tissues of the face, mouth, teeth and jaws need to be diagnosed efficiently and effectively. This is known as oral surgery.

While we always use the least invasive treatment possible for any given dental issue, in some cases, less invasive treatment alternatives are simply not sufficient and oral surgery is needed.

Dental Implants

A dental implant is a small titanium screw which functions much like a natural tooth root. Used to replace either a single lost tooth or several missing teeth in an effort to restore your smile, the implant is surgically placed into the jaw bone. It will then bond with the natural bone and act as an anchor for a tooth replacement such as a dental crown.

Gum Grafts

Receding gums or exposed tooth roots can often be repaired or covered with a gum graft. During this procedure, gum tissue is transplanted from the roof of the mouth onto another area of the gums. Any associated symptoms such as severe tooth sensitivity or eventual tooth loss can be reduced. This procedure also helps preserve your oral health.

Tooth Extractions

While we always strive to save a natural tooth, in some cases this will prove impossible. If a tooth is too severely damaged as a result of injury, gum disease or decay, it may need to be removed by your dentist.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

The final set of molars to emerge in the back corners of a normal adult mouth are wisdom teeth. If wisdom teeth are causing oral hygiene issues, your dental may recommend having them removed to help preserve your oral health.

Frenectomy

During a frenectomy procedure, your dentist eliminates a frenum, a small piece of tissue joining your tongue, cheeks or lips to your gum area. Though frenectomies are typically completed for babies, this procedure can also be performed on children and adults if the frenum is restricting function, a condition known as tongue-tied, lip-tied or cheek-tied.

Sinus Lifts

A sinus lift is a type of bone grafting procedure during which your dentist adds bone material to your upper back jaw in preparation for a dental implant. A certain amount of bone needs to be present for a dental implant to fuse with the jaw bone. A sinus lift helps to increase the amount of bone in the sinus area, allowing the implant to be placed.
